Nepal Mountaineering Association celebrates pioneering achievements

On 29-30 April, the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the first ascents of Mounts Manaslu (8,163m) and Lhotse (8,516m). The occasion will be marked by a Diamond Jubilee celebration and the publication of a special edition of its Nepal Parbat journal.
“Nepal Mountaineering Association’s role and efforts in the promotion of mountain tourism in Nepal is commendable,” explains UIAA President Frits Vrijlandt. “I am very pleased to learn that the NMA is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of the first successful ascents of Mounts Manaslu and Lhotse. I have the firm belief that the Jubilee celebrations will provide a perfect showcase for these awe-inspiring Himalayan peaks and their rich heritage.”
Vrijlandt continues: “Past celebrations dedicated to Nepal’s +8,000m peaks have been very successful in the positive promotion of the region. I have the firm belief that this Diamond Jubilee celebration will further contribute to raising awareness about these iconic Himalayan peaks, their history and the challenges faced today, and in the future. From everyone at the UIAA, best wishes to everyone associated with organizing this worthy celebration.”
