Celebration of the first ascents of Mounts Makalu and Kanchenjunga

News from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) related to their Diamond Jubilee Celebration marking the first successful ascents of Mounts Makalu (8,481) and Kanchenjunga (8,586m).

The General Assembly of the Union of Asian Alpine Associations (UAAA) is scheduled for 18-19 November in Kathmandu. All the members of the UAAA have been invited to attend the meeting. The International Conference on Mountain Tourism, Climate Change and Earthquakes in Nepal will be also organized in Kathmandu during the same timeframe.

To mark the same occasion, the NMA is organising a 60th anniversary celebration of the first successful ascents of Mounts Makalu (May 1955, by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy from France) and Kanchenjunga (the same month and year, by Englishmen Joe Brown and George Band). Celebrations were initially planned for last year but postponed due to the terrible earthquakes which hit the country.

The NMA has already sent an invitation through the UIAA to all Mt Makalu and Kanchenjunga summiteers to attend both the celebrations and the conference.

For summiters interested in attending the event or full details please refer to the linked letter from the NMA or contact office@neparmountaineering.org.
