Tributes paid to former UIAA Medcom President Bruno Durrer

The UIAA is saddened by the news that former UIAA Medical Commission President and longstanding UIAA Medical Commission member Bruno Durrer passed away at the age of 62 earlier this month.

“Bruno was very much an internationally respected figure in mountain medicine and mountain rescue, and more than that, he was a very kind and very funny man. He is gone much too soon – a tragic loss to us all,” explained current UIAA Medical Commission President George Rodway. A Swiss national, Bruno Durrer was instrumental in many of the successful initiatives developed by by the UIAA Medical Commission notably the Diploma in Mountain Medicine.

The UIAA expresses its deepest condolences to Bruno Durrer’s family and friends.

Hermann Brugger and the ISMM posted their own tribute to Bruno Durrer: “It is very sadly I have to tell you that Bruno Durrer, 62yrs, passed away during a diving holiday in Suwalesi, Indonesia. We lose a great man, and a pioneering rescue doctor – he is unforgettable!

Bruno was a GP and rescue doctor in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, and one of the most experienced practitioners I know. He has contributed so much to the development of mountain rescue medicine.

He chaired the Medical Commission of the International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation UIAA Medcom and was a member of ICAR Medcom for decades.

We will miss you Bruno!

On behalf of all ISMM members I express our deepest condolences to Bruno’s wife Susi, his family and all his friends.”
